(Merit attempt)
Lighting is used to great effect during a pivotal point in Apocalypto. Jaguar Paw is about to be sacrificed to the sun god, as the priest lifts the dagger the warm sunlight starts to fade. The moon has covered the sun engulfing everything in partial darkness. It is as if the moon protects him from the sun god, because the priests take it as a sign to stop the sacrifice. The majority of the movie after this scene is lit without warm light, the lighting is more grey.
Remember your discussion for this assessment should be focused on the techniques as used in the opening scene. So you should be explaining in these bits how the techniques in the intro establish the film and the characters, as well as hint at themes and ideas that are explored in more depth later.
